Word Farm Puzzles: Test Your Vocabulary and Spelling Skills
Sense of "tract of leased land" is first recorded early 14c.; that of "cultivated land" (leased or not) is 1520s. A word of confused history, but there is agreement that "the purely agricultural sense is comparatively modern" [Century Dictionary]. There is a set of Old English words that appear to be related in sound and sense; if these, too, are from Latin it would be a very early borrowing. Some books strenuously defend a theory that the Anglo-Saxon words are original (perhaps related to feorh "life").
word farm
Phrase buy the farm "die in battle," is from at least World War II, perhaps a cynical reference to the draftee's dream of getting out of the war and going home, in many cases to a peaceful farmstead. The simple term buy it as slang for "suffer a mishap," especially "to die" is attested by 1825, and seems to have been picked up in airmen's jargon. Meanwhile fetch the farm is prisoner slang from at least 1879 for "get sent to the infirmary," with reference to the better diet and lighter duties there.
c. 1300, herber, "herb garden, pleasure garden," from Old French erbier "field, meadow; kitchen garden," from Latin herba "grass, herb" (see herb). Later "a grassy plot" (mid-14c., a sense also in Old French), "shaded nook, bower formed by intertwining of trees, shrubs, or vines" (mid-14c.). It is probably not from Latin arbor "tree" (see arbor (n.2)), though perhaps that word has influenced its spelling:
The source of ferme is Anglo-French fermer, meaning "to rent." That French verb is based on Medieval Latin firma, meaning "fixed payment," and the Latin verb firmare, "to make firm." In the mid-15th century, ferme was also being used as a verb having the same meaning as its French source. William Shakespeare used it that way in Hamlet in the word's modern form, which took shape during the 16th century:
It was around the early 16th century that the word farm was applied to the land held on lease for agricultural purposes, and later to any land used for the raising of crops, regardless of tenancy or ownership. By that century's end, farmer was being used in the familiar general sense referring to a person who cultivates land.
With its ties to contractual work, farm out can be considered a surviving link to the early capitalistic senses of farm relating to renting and money collecting that have been metaphorically buried by the agricultural farmer's plow.

Since the 16th century, the word "farm" has meant "land used for agricultural purposes." But a much older meaning is related to economics. The English word farm comes from the Latin word firma, which means an unchanging payment.
Experts say the earliest meaning of "farm" was a yearly payment made on a loan or as a tax. Centuries ago, English farmers did not own their land. They made payments to the owner for the right to grow crops.

My interest in food took me to Seattle to pursue a Master's degree in nutrition at Bastyr University, but my love of New England brought me back home to start my own farm and delve deeply into the world of fermentation (lacto, koji, vinegar, & alcoholic) and foraging. Where I need to sort the requests is if anywhere in the URL it has 'dog' it sends it to one server farm, but if it has 'cat' anywhere in the URL it goes to a different farm. I have tried so many variations of URL rewriting rules and have really not found anything that is helping.
